Mid-week Spa Retreat!
Despite not wanting a fuss – Dan convinced me to celebrate my birthday in style. Reluctantly! He booked an overnighter at a restaurant with spa rooms based in Norfolk: The Pigs.
Booking a half day at work and sneaking off in the afternoon on a Tuesday seemed a treat in itself. And after what felt like a much longer drive than two hours (mostly due to being stuck behind a tractor) we finally arrived in a small village – Edgefield. The weather was forecast not to be in our favour but with the promise of a spa room we didn’t mind locking ourselves away for the night at all!
Happy as pigs in…
We arrived at a lovely countryside pub – but not noticeably a spa. We’d seen the rooms online so the anticipation was really high. We were led to Room 17 past an honesty bar with FREE marshmallows and cookies. It’s safe to say it surpassed our expectations. The room was stunning. Huge vaulted ceiling, very ample bedroom with all amenities and a HUGGGE bathroom/spa space. Luxurious didn’t cut it! We instantly felt relaxed.
The bathroom was the same size as the bedroom space. It had its own steam room, sauna, double shower and bath, twin sinks and robes. All was wired up to the sound system which made the spa experience even better – saunaing to Laura Marling just elevated the experience.
And not to mention the outdoor space! We had our own private courtyard with fire pit. Perfect for making s’mores in the evening. Absolute bliss. It also had the slightly less blissful ice cold drench bucket – which we bravely tried.
[Edit: Spoiler, we’ve been back since we originally wrote this. Going a bit earlier in the year, we did take full advantage of the blankets as we snuggled up in front of the fire pit and attempted to make s’mores again and star gazed in the Norfolk countryside and enjoyed zero light pollution.]
he bedroom was also very well equipped for a hotel room, luxurious king bed, sofa, tea and coffee station and Sky TV, which made it feel like home from home and we were even able to enjoy movies in the evening.
There was also another added benefit – The Garden Spa. A free to book Jacuzzi and spa space. You can book up to 45minutes for every night you’re booked in. At first we weren’t sure if we’d take advantage of this. But it really does add to the spa experience. With its own outdoor space, Nespresso machine and general chilled vibe – it’s a lovely little perk!
Food glorious food
It’s probably a no brainer that the place being called The Pigs would’ve had a lot of pig on the menu. But there’s also a really good selection of pescatarian dishes but only a handful of veggie dishes if we’re honest. [Edit: Second time we went had a vegan menu and a generous amount of veggie options]
We went for a DB&B package so we had £50 to spend on dinner on the night. We shared tapas style dishes to start and each opted for a main. But the tapas was amazing so we really wish we’d gone all tapas. Dessert was also a highlight and all in these powdery pink surroundings!
Whilst they don’t offer room service (perhaps they do?!) they do have a service hatch/bar which serves naughty milkshakes and indulgent treats for your room. But feeling all salt of the earth after spa-ing we sampled some delicious smoothies. [Edit: they offer room service!]
Breakfast was also good. They have a breakfast table you can help yourself to and then you can pick any main from the breakfast menu. A fifteen mile fry-up, Eggs Royale and rarebit all featue.
Can’t wait to go back
Although my birthday present I think we both agree it was worth every penny. In addition, we had a Norfolk Passport (it’s free to apply for but gets you 10% off here and at all their sister outlets too!). Also as a phone service blackspot you can truly opt to switch off. But they have free Wi-Fi if you’re in the mood for ‘grammin. As you know we’re always down for that!
All in all – for one night it was a perfect. It felt as though we were away for much longer.
[Edit: So good in fact – we stayed two further nights after our wedding in May for our mini-moon. It was perfect! We’re also seriously jealous that this new addition has just opened. We came back to work refreshed, relaxed, waxing lyrical and of course, very loved-up. I think all of my colleagues have or will be booking a stay here too. Can we book a third time already?!
Cute, right? Gin was a wedding gift though!]
Thank you Dan for welcoming me into my 28th year – it’s gonna be a good’un!
[Edit: Post originally written last year, after our visit in Summer 2017. We’ve since been back again so edits refer to our second visit. Yes, this has been sat in draft for months, but hey, we had a wedding to plan!]
